犀牛皮觀音蓮屬於林蔭下層的耐蔭植物，為天南星科熱帶亞洲雨林的植物；個體不大約在10~15公分，葉子為不裂葉之掌狀托葉，除葉脈外細紋路千交百錯構成粗糙的葉面，故名「犀牛皮觀音蓮」；根部容易產生不定根芽，可以此分株繁殖，比起一般的觀音蓮類，它的生長緩慢，屬小型類觀音蓮，喜觀半蔭的環境，需要排水良好的栽培介質，否則地下莖容易腐爛。
